Sankofa Knowledge Exchange (SKE)

Honoring the Past. Empowering the Future.

The word Sankofa comes from the Akan people of Ghana and means "to go back and get it." It is often represented by a bird looking backward while moving forward, symbolizing the importance of learning from the past to build a stronger future. At Sankofa Knowledge Exchange (SKE), we embody this philosophy by equipping Black foster youth with the knowledge, confidence, and community to embrace their history, celebrate their culture, and step into leadership.

SKE is more than a leadership program—it is a space for reflection, healing, and empowerment. Through cultural exploration, storytelling, and skill-building, participants develop a deep sense of self, a connection to their heritage, and the tools to lead with confidence.

What We Do

Cultural Upliftment

Black history is filled with stories of brilliance, resistance, and innovation. SKE guides participants through key historical moments and cultural traditions, showing how Black communities have always innovated ways to thrive. Through storytelling, music, art, and discussion, participants connect with the past in ways that affirm their identities and strengthen their sense of belonging.

Leadership Development

SKE provides hands-on experiences that prepare youth to step into leadership. Participants learn public speaking, facilitation, and creative expression while developing the confidence to share their voices in meaningful ways. Whether leading discussions, presenting workshops, or engaging in dialogue with peers and mentors, youth leave the program ready to take on leadership roles within their communities.

Healing & Self-Discovery

Navigating foster care, identity, and personal growth can be complex. SKE creates a supportive, culturally affirming space for youth to explore their personal journeys, build community with peers who understand their experiences, and engage in healing practices rooted in Black traditions.
